Riots Provoke Sportsmanship

Street riots broke out in Vancouver after the Canucks ice hockey team lost in the final of the North American Championship (the Stanley Cup) against Boston last month. Police cars were burned, looting and violence spread. One group of Canucks fans did something unusual.

Hundreds of  young fans (from Vancouver’s Langley Elementary School) wrote to hundreds of Boston students  (in Eliot K-8 school) to congratulate them and remind them that Vancouver is not a bad city.

It’s great to see opposition fans applaud each other. We’ve now got examples from England, Ireland, Wales, Spain, USA and now Canada – fair play to these kids and their teachers for making a great gesture of sportsmanship – applauding the opposition.
